Richard Charles Potter was born in Croydon, Surrey in April 1889 and, having emigrated to Canada, found work as a miner in Edmonton. Enlisting in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force in January 1915, he joined the 28th Battalion Canadian Infantry in France and was, as cited in his unit’s war diary, awarded the M.M. for his gallantry as a member of ‘B’ Company in the attacks launched on enemy positions at Nunns Valley and Cinnebar Trenches on 21-22 August 1917; sold with copied research, including attestation papers and war diary extracts.
