A Crimean War D.C.M. group of four awarded to Colour Serjeant J. Ross, 41st Regiment and West Yorkshire Militia

Distinguished Conduct Medal, V.R. (Colr-Serjt. J. Ross. 41st Regt.); Crimea 1854-56, 3 clasps, Alma, Inkermann, Sebastopol (St. Mr. J. Ross, 41st Regt.) contemporary engraved naming, lacking lugs from top clasp, one recently removed; Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., 3rd issue (1858 Serjt. J. Ross, 5th West York Militia); Turkish Crimea 1855, British issue, naming erased, plugged and fitted with a ‘British Crimea’ style suspension, edge bruising, contact marks, nearly very fine and better (4) £1800-2200

John Ross was born in Yardley, near Birmingham and attested for the 41st Regiment at Coventry on 9 October 1839, age 18 years. Promoted to Corporal in August 1841; Serjeant in October 1843; Colour Serjeant in January 1849; Quartermaster Serjeant in March 1855; Serjeant-Major in September 1855 and reverted to Colour Serjeant in October 1856. Served over two years in the Crimea. Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal with gratuity (medal ordered 15 January 1857). Discharged at his own request after 21 years service on 10 October 1860. Attested for the Stafford Militia on 23 October 1860 and West Yorkshire Militia on 19 October 1864. With copied service papers.
