Montague Allan Hume Scott was appointed a Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers in December 1907 and sometime thereafter was embarked for India, where he received the Delhi Durbar Medal in 1911 while serving as Garrison Engineer at Ambala (the official roll refers). Advanced to Captain in October 1914, he first went to France with No. 83 Field Company, R.E., in July 1915 but subsequently assumed command of No. 84 Field Company in the acting rank of Major April 1916. Under his command the Company saw action in the Ypres salient before moving to the Somme in August 1916, where it acted in support of operations at Guillemont, Mericourt and Longueval. Scott remained in command of the Company until June 1917, once more taking it to the Ypres salient, and was awarded a brace of M.Cs and a mention in despatches (
London Gazette 14 December 1917, refers).

Returning to India after the Great War, he was granted the temporary rank of Lieutenant-Colonel while serving as an Assistant Director of Works during the Third Afghan War in the summer of 1919, and gained advancement to the substantive rank of Major in September 1922. Having then been placed on half-pay in January 1934, he gained appointment - in the rank of Colonel - as Chief Engineer, R.A.F., in October 1936, an appointment he was unable to fulfil owing to ill-health. He died of heart failure aboard the P. & O. liner
Cathay at Plymouth in the same month, having returned to England for medical treatment; sold with copied research, including war diary extracts for No. 84 Field Company, R.E., 1916-17, many of the entries signed-off by Scott.
