The Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Officer’s (Sister’s) shoulder badge, silver and enamel, mounted ‘bow and tails’; Southern Rhodesia Medal for War Service, unnamed; Coronation 1953, unnamed, on bow ribbon; St. John Service Medal (6906 J. Mawby, C. Africa S.J.A.B. 1952) silvered bronze; Rhodesia, General Service Medal (202898Q W/F/R/ J. J. Mawby); together with a St. John Ambulance Re-examination Cross, bronze, reverse inscribed, ‘A60951 Joan Mawby’, good very fine (6)

Order of St. John, Officer (Sisters) London Gazette 26 June 1953.

Joan Mawby was born in Johannesburg, Union of South Africa on 7 May 1914. Her early childhood was spent in Southern Rhodesia where she attended the Dominican Convent in Salisbury. In 1938 she joined the St. John Ambulance Brigade, being a member, 1938-55. She attained the rank of Commandery Superintendent for Central Africa, being awarded the Service Medal in 1952; the Coronation Medal in 1953 and the Order of St. John Officer (Sister) in 1953. In post-U.D.I. Southern Rhodesia she served with the B.S.A.P. Reservists.

With two riband bars; original award document for the Coronation Medal; copied service details and three group photographs in which she is featured - one as a nurse in 1939; another as a District Officer in 1947 and the third as Commandery Superintendent in 1950.
