A civil M.B.E. group of four awarded to Lieutenant F. McGowan, Machine Gun Corps, late West Riding Regiment - latterly Archdeacon of Sarum
The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, M.B.E. (Civil) Member’s 2nd type breast badge, silver, in Royal Mint case of issue; British War and Victory Medals (Lieut.); Defence Medal, unnamed; with a mounted set of four miniature dress medals and with Silver War Badge (366001)

Frank McGowan served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the West Riding Regiment and Lieutenant in the Machine Gun Corps and was awarded the Silver War Badge. After the war he studied for the Church, attending St. Edmund’s Hall, Oxford and gaining a B.A. in 1920 , a Diploma in Theology in 1922 and M.A. in 1924. He was ordained as a Deacon in 1922 and Priest in 1923. McGowan served as Curate of St. Michael’s, Bouremouth, 1922-25; Vicar of St. Mark’s, Birmingham, 1935-29; Rector of Cholderton, 1929-54, Appointed Canon and Prebendary of Gillingham Major in Sarum Cathedral from 1944; Archdeacon of Sarum from 1951, and Prior of St. John’s Hospice, Burcombe from 1954.

Mr John L. T. Shawcross, father-on-law of the above, served with the Y.M.C.A. in France from 13 January 1916.

His son, and Frank McGowan’s brother-in-law, served in the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment in France from 17 July 1915. With copied research.
