A Second World War B.E.M. group of four to Master at Arms F. A. Bicknell, Royal Navy

British Empire Medal, G.VI.R., 1st issue, Military (M.A.A. Frederick A. Bicknell, D/M 39643); 1939-45 Star; Africa Star; War Medal 1939-45 generally good very fine (4) £140-160

B.E.M. London Gazette 11 June 1942. The recommendation states:

‘For tireless patience and self-sacrificing zeal as Master at Arms of an establishment comprising 700-800 ratings over half of whom are Dutch, French or Polish. That all these ratings have worked amicably together, is due to the inexhaustible patience, common sense and tact of Master at Arms Bicknell.’

Frederick A. Bicknell was serving aboard H.M.S.
Ambrose, a submarine depot ship, at the time of being gazetted for his B.E.M., which award he received at an investiture on 13 October 1942.
