Arthur Harry Cooper was born in 1901 and originally enlisted into the Worcestershire Regiment in about 1920. After serving in the ranks he was commissioned Lieutenant and Quartermaster in September 1938 and Acting Captain in November 1940. Cooper first saw active service with the 1st battalion Worcestershire Regiment in Palestine, 1936-39 and later, with the same battalion in the Eritrean Campaign, 1939-42. He was mentioned in the despatches of 1.4.1941 for ‘distinguished services in the Middle East during the period August 1939 to November 1940’ and was subsequently awarded the M.B.E. for ‘distinguished services in the Middle East during the period July to October 1941’. Again serving with the 1st battalion Worcestershire Regiment in the Western Desert Campaign 1942, he was mortally wounded during the 2nd Siege of Tobruk. He was subsequently evacuated to South Africa where he died on 31.8.1942.
