Approximately 50 men received both the ‘Iraq 1919-1920’ and ‘Somaliland 1920’ clasps.
William Henry Shingleton was born in Tunbridge Wells, Kent in January 1891 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in May 1908. An Able Seaman aboard H.M.S. Phoenix by the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914, he was present in that destroyer at the Battle of Dogger Bank in the following year and, as a Leading Seaman, served aboard another destroyer, the Pigeon, from June 1916 until December 1917. Shingleton joined the Clio in October 1919 and was one of a total of 122 R.N. and R.M. personnel to receive the ‘ Iraq 1919-1920’ clasp, for services in river gunboats between July and November 1920, in addition to the ‘Somaliland 1920’ clasp, one of 151 granted to the crew of the Clio. Shingleton was pensioned ashore shortly after leaving her in December 1921.
