Three: Captain J. W. Lack, Suffolk Regiment

1914-15 Star (Lieut., Suff. R.); British War and Victory Medals (Capt.); together with an attractive handpainted oval portrait miniature of recipient in uniform, painted on ivory, this contained in its original glazed brass-gilt frame and fitted leather double-fronted carrying case, extremely fine (4) £400-450

John Westlake Lack died of wounds in France and Flanders on 26 July 1916 whilst serving with the 8th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. He is buried at Abbeville Communal Cemetery, Somme, France.

The following is extracted from The Times, 1 August 1916: ‘... died of wounds on July 26th, aged 25. He was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs John W. Lack of Talbot Road Road, Highgate, London. He was educated at Grove House, Highgate. He served for some years in the Artists Rifles and entered service at the Bank of England. On the outbreak of war he volunteered for active service, obtained his commission as Lieutenant in October 1914. He was M.I.D. and promoted Captain last September. He had been at the Front for twelve months.’
