Arthur Besley Ellis was born in 1893 at Thornton Heath, Croydon. He enlisted on 21.9.1914 as a Private in the 23rd London Regiment and served in France from 12.3.1915 to 29.5.1915 when he was wounded. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 9.9.1915. With the 9th, attached 3rd Battalion Devonshire Regiment he again served in France from 20.5.1916 to 3.7.1916 and was wounded on 1.7.1916 on the First day of the Battle of the Somme. He applied for a permanent position with the Indian Army in June 1917 and being accepted he sailed to India and in October 1918 was serving with the 3rd Sikh Pioneers attached to 32nd Pioneers. He was promoted Captain on 28.5.1920 and retired from the Indian Army in 1933. Sold with copied service papers and other research details.
