Alfred Morgan was born in Tonbridge, Kent and enlisted in the Royal Artillery in February 1874, aged 19 years. Arriving in India in January of the following year, where he served until October 1884, he was present in the operations at Ahmed Khel and Kandahar in the Second Afghan War, during which period he was a Gunner in 11th Battery, 9th Brigade, R.A., part of Lord Roberts’ Field Force. Morgan, who briefly served in Aden between 1884-85, was advanced to Bombardier in May 1881, to Corporal in June 1883 and to Sergeant in May 1890. He was finally discharged at Portsmouth as a Sergeant Cook in February 1895.
