Badge of Chaplain to the Queen, E.II.R., gilt and enamel openwork pin-backed badge, reverse inscribed, ‘Rt. Rev. E. K. C. Hamilton, K.C.V.O.’, good very fine £150-200

The Rt. Rev. Eric Knightley Chetwode Hamilton was born in London in 1890 and educated at Bradfield and University College London, gaining a B.A. in 1913 and a M.A. in 1917. He became a Deacon in 1913 and in 1914 he became a Priest at St. Peter’s, Eaton Square. He was Priest in charge of St. John’s of Wilton Road during 1918-25, was Vicar of Chiswick during 1925-29 and Vicar of St. Paul’s of Knightsbridge during 1929-40. In 1940 he was appointed Suffragen Bishop of Shrewsbury and Rector of Edgmond but resigned in 1944 to take up the appointment as Dean of Windsor. At the same time he was also appointed Domestic Chaplain to the King and then after his death in 1952, to the Queen. As Dean of Windsor he was heavily involved in the funeral of King George VI. In 1944 he was also appointed Registrar of the Most Noble Order of the Garter. In 1955 he was created a K.C.V.O. He died in 1962.
