Royal Naval Good Shooting Medal, G.V.R. (236962 F. Matthews, A.B., H.M.S. Highflyer, 1912, 12 Pr. Q.F.) polished and contact marks, about very fine £140-160

Frederick Matthews was in the parish of Millbrook, Cornwall in September 1888 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in September 1906. Rapidly gaining advancement to Gunlayer 1st Class, in the rate of Ordinary Seaman, in April of the following year, he served throughout the Great War in the battleship H.M.S. Collingwood, being present at Jutland and advanced to Petty Officer (Gunner) in April 1917. Matthews was finally pensioned ashore as a Chief Petty Officer in September 1928, having been awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in March 1922.
