Hukum Singh joined the 3rd Bombay Light Cavalry (later 33rd Queen’s Own Light Cavalry) on 27 February 1879. He was promoted Jemadar, 16 May 1888; Ressaidar, 1 October 1892; Risaldar, 1 March 1896. He served in Afghanistan in 1879 (Medal); North West Frontier of India, Mahsud Waziri, 1881; China 1900 (Medal).
