Private J. Stewart joined the Artists’ Rifles in August 1914, and went to France with the 1st Battalion on 26 October 1914. He was commissioned in November 1914 and joined the 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots, at Bailleul on 10 November, serving with them until 3 January 1915. From November 1915 he served with the 1st Battalion, Royal Scots, until severely wounded on 18 May 1916 as Acting Adjutant of the Battalion. During this period he had successively held the appointments of Officer I/C Snipers & Intelligence, Officer I/C Bombers, and Assistant Adjutant. On 5 April 1917 he was seconded to the Royal Flying Corps and appointed Acting Adjutant at Ascot Repair Depot, transferring in May to Lympne Aeroplane Erection Park. He was promoted to Captain in June 1917, and was Acting Commandant at Brooklands Aircraft Acceptance Park from December 1917 to 13 March 1918.
