Hubert Leo Stokes was born at Dunmow, Essex, and enlisted into the Rifle Brigade on 21 May 1895, aged 18 years. After service in the Nile Expedition of 1898, he served during the occupation of Crete from October 1898 to October 1899, and proceeded directly to South Africa. He went back to England in May 1900 before returning to South Africa, where he served until the conclusion of the war. He was finally discharged in July 1902. His entitlement to the Volunteer Long Service medal has not been confirmed and seems very unlikely. The vendor, however, states that when purchased this group was mounted as worn.
