Eugene Domenick (
sic) Cura was born in London, England on 29.6.1884. He enlisted in the Canadian Infantry at Windsor, Ontario on 2.3.1916. On enlistment his address was given as Congress St., Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. He joined the 99th Battalion, C.E.F. and sailed to Europe on S.S. Olympic, arriving in England on 8 June 1916. In September 1916 he was transferred to the 19th Battalion in France. On 11.4.1917 he received a gunshot wound to the left elbow in an attack on Vimy Ridge and only returned to his unit again in April 1918. Cura was promoted Acting Lance Corporal on 20.9.1918, Lance Corporal on 24.10.1918, Corporal on 12.12.1918 and Sergeant on 24.1.1919. In May 1919 he returned to Canada aboard S.S. Cargnia.
