Distinguished Service Order, V.R., silver-gilt and enamels; Queen’s Sudan 1896-98 (2nd Lieut., 2/Rif. Bde.); Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 4 clasps, Defence of Ladysmith, Laing’s Nek, Belfast, Orange Free State (Capt., Rifle Bde.) rank officially corrected and last clasp a contemporary copy; King’s South Africa 1901-02, 2 clasps, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902 (Capt., D.S.O. Rif. Bde.); Khedive’s Sudan 1896-1908, 1 clasp, Khartoum (2nd Lieut., R.B.) these last four mounted as worn; 1914 Star (Capt., D.S.O., Rif. Bingham Alexander Turner was born on 30 May 1877, and educated at Wellington and Sandhurst. He was commissioned into the Rifle Brigade on 22 January 1898, and served in the Nile Expedition of that year, being present at the battle of Khartoum. He became Lieutenant on 11 December 1899, and served in the South African War, 1899-1902. He took part in operations in Natal in 1899, including the action at Lombards Kop; in the defence of Ladysmith, including the sortie of 10 December 1899, and action of 6 January 1900; operations in Natal, March to June 1900, including action at Laing’s Nek (6-9 June); operations in the Transvaal, east of Pretoria, July to 29 November 1900, including actions at Belfast (26 and 27 August) in which he was slightly wounded, and Lydenburg (5-8 September). He was subsequently employed with the Mounted Infantry in operations in the Transvaal, November 1900 to May 1902. He was mentioned in despatches London Gazette 25 April 1902, and awarded the Distinguished Service Order, London Gazette 26 June 1902. He was invested by the King on 24 October 1902. Captain Turner retired from the Regular Army in July 1909, and joined the 6th (Reserve) Battalion of his regiment, being attached to the 2nd Battalion, King’s Royal Rifle Corps, for active service during the Great War. He was killed in action on 2 November 1914.
