Ernest Frederick Hobbs was born on 31.1.1885 at Alverstoke, Portsmouth, Hampshire. he enlisted in 1899, aged 19, as a Private and thence a Bugler in the Portsmouth Division R.M.L.I. Promoted Corporal in 1903, Sergeant in 1911, Colour Sergeant in 1917 and Quarter Master Sergeant in 1920, served in the Great War aboard H.M.S. Egmont. In the latter part of the War he was part of the Royal Marine Guard on the island of Corfu, for which he was awarded his M.S.M. He was pensioned in 1923. In addition to the above, he had been awarded the Royal Life Saving Society’s Bronze Medallion, Proficiency Certificate, Order of Merit and Instructor’s Certificate. Sold with copied service papers.
