Ernest Reginald Prance, the son of the Rev. E. H. Prance, was educated at Wellington College and Clare College, Cambridge. He gained a B.A. in 1897, was Ordained in 1899 and gained a M.A. in 1903. He took his first position in 1903 at Cudderston, then at Thomas-a-Beckett Church at Portsmouth. With the outbreak of the Great War, he opted to serve in the ranks of the Royal Fusiliers (1914-16) before taking the rank as a Chaplain to the Forces (1916-19).
