Albert James Frederick Berry was born in Devon, England on 28.4.1888. By profession a Schoolmaster, he enlisted into the New Zealand Expeditionary Force on 29.5.1915 and received the rank of Sergeant in the 1st battalion Trentham Regiment. On 15.11.1915 he arrived in Suez, Egypt and after a bout of influenza and severe pleurisy was sent to France in April 1916, being attached to the School of Gas Instruction during April - July 1916 before returning to his unit. He was promoted 2nd Lieutenant on 22.7.1916. On 4.8.1916 he was posted to ‘B’ Company 4th Battalion New Zealand Rifle Brigade and on 12.10.1917 he was killed in action in Belgium whilst serving with his unit. He was buried at Passchendaele New British Cemetery, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Sold with copied service papers.
