Redbreast); British War and Victory Medals (Capt., R.N.); France, Medal of Honour, Ministry of the Navy, gold, reverse embossed (Quayle, Commandant le “Pegasus” 1908) with rosette on ribbon; Thailand, Visit to Europe Medal, Rama V, 25mm., silver, unnamed, together with miniature dress medals of the A.G.S. 1 clasp, Somaliland 1902-04 and the French Medal of Honour, silver-gilt, engraved details, named, nearly extremely fine (7) £700-750
George Cunninghame Quayle, Naval Cadet 1885, Midshipman 1887, Sub-Lieutenant 1891, Lieutenant 1893, Commander 1903, retired as Captain 1910. Placed in command of the cruiser H.M.S. Pegasus on 7.1.1907. Granted permission in 1908 to wear medal from French Government for services to S.S. President Felix Faure. Recalled for service during the Great War, he was commended in February 1916 for ‘excellent work done in Fisgard and Indus since the outbreak of war.’ Captain Quayle committed suicide ‘whilst of unsound mind’ on 13 June 1919.
