Pair: Private K. McLennan, 79th Highlanders

Indian Mutiny 1857-59, 1 clasp, Lucknow (313 Pte., 79th Highr.); India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, North West Frontier (313 Pte., 79th F.), later issues, first with copy clasp, claw tightened on second, good very fine (2) £180-220

Kenneth McLennan enrolled as a Private in the Inverness Regiment of Militia in July 1857. In September the same year he was discharged and attested as a Private in the 79th Highlanders. He transferred to the 72nd Regiment in 1871 and was discharged as medically unfit in 1878. Sold with copied service papers, newspaper clippings of his death and research details. An extract from his obituary reads, ‘He joined the 79th Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders very early in life and served throughout the Indian Mutiny campaign of 1858-59. He was present at the siege and capture of Lucknow, for which he held the medal and clasp. He also served in the Northwest Frontier Capaign in India in 1863, for which he had a medal and clasp. Mr McLennan had a record of 21 years service in India. After returning to civil life, he was employed at Inverness Post Office for many years.’

Research indicates that the recipient was not entitled to the Lucknow clasp. Research documents state that a duplicate Indian Mutiny Medal was sent to Horse Guards, for onwards despatch on 1.2.1894. Similarly, an I.G.S. medal with clasp was sent to the War Office for onwards despatch on 17.1.1896.
