Rifle Volunteer Interest, an extremely fine and desirable cast silver kneeling figure of a Volunteer Rifleman, the silver ‘ground’ base with London & Sovereign’s head marks but no date letter, maker’s mark of J. S. Hunt (Hunt & Roskell), circa 1856-65, the full bearded figure wears the 1855/61 pattern shako complete with cock’s feather plumes, the shako plate of crowned ovate outline, the single breasted long skirted 1856 pattern tunic, pouch and pouch belt and waist belt, armed with the three band Enfield percussion rifle and corresponding bayonet, which sits freely in its frog and will fit the rifle, approx 105mm excluding base, the figure mounted on a rectangular piece of green-black marble, an outstanding example of a Victorian military figure in excellent condition £400-500

The cocks feather plumes suggest a London Corps, but as most units adopted this flamboyant plume in the early days, 1859-1863, it is not possible to be precise. John Samuel Hunt was a partner in the firm of Hunt & Roskell and died on 20 May 1865.
