Drake, Royal Navy, East and West Africa, 1 clasp, Witu 1890; British War Medal; Italy, Order of the Crown, gilt and enamel; Italy, Messina Earthquake Medal, silvered metal, mounted as worn, good very fine and better (4) £50-70

Engineer Commander Sydney James Drake was Engineer aboard H.M.S. Boadicea when serving in the punitive expedition against the Sultan of Witu. He was Engineer aboard H.M.S. Sparrow on the occasion of the bombardment and capture of the Sultan of Zanzibar’s palace in August 1896. As Engineer Commander aboard H.M.S. Lancaster, he aided the inhabitants of Southern Italy following the disastrous earthquake of 1908, for which he was awarded the Order of the Crown of Italy .
