The mounted group of four miniature dress medals attributed to Vice-Admiral C. S. Cardale, Royal Navy, Baltic; Abyssinia; Egypt, dated reverse, no clasp; Khedive’s Star 1882, mounted as worn, good very fine (4) £120-160

Vice-Admiral Charles S. Cardale entered the Royal Navy as a Naval Cadet in 1854 and served aboard H.M.S. James Watt in the Baltic. As a 1st Lieutenant aboard H.M.S. Satellite he served against pirates on the east coast of the Malay Peninsular and in the Nicobar Expedition of 1867. He landed with the Naval Brigade in Abyssinia during 1868 and was engaged at the battle of Arogee and the taking of Magdala, for which he was twice mentioned in despatches and promoted Commander. Appointed Captain in 1878, he commanded H.M.S. Euphrates in the Egypt War of 1882. Holding the appointment of A.D.C. to the Queen 1891-92, he attained the rank of Vice-Admiral in 1899, retiring the following year.
