Brigadier-General The Hon. Charles Lambton was born in 1857, the fourth son of the 2nd Earl of Durham. Educated at Eton, he was gazetted to the Northumberland Fusiliers in 1876. Between 1886 and 1889 he was A.D.C. to the Viceroy of Ireland. Promoted Major in 1895, he served in the Nile Expedition of 1898, being present at the battle of Khartoum, for which he was mentioned in despatches and created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order (London Gazette 15.11.1898). He served in the Boer War, in command of the 2nd Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers from 9.4.1900 to 31.5.1902. Involved in many operations, he was present in the advance on Kimberley, including actions at Belmont, Enslin, Modder River and Magersfontein. For his services he was mentioned in despatches. He retired with the rank of Colonel in 1904 and died in 1949. Sold with copied family and service details.
