The mounted group of six miniature dress medals attributed to Lieutenant-General Sir Andrew Clarke, C.B., G.C.M.G., C.I.E., Royal Engineers, Order of the Bath, Civil Division, gold, with gold buckle on ribbon; Order of St. Michael and St. George, gold and enamel, damage to ‘St. Michael’ centre; Order of the Indian Empire, 1st type, ‘india’ on petals, gold and enamel; New Zealand, undated; India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, North West Frontier; Empress of India 1877, 18mm., silver-gilt, reverse engraved, mounted as worn, good very fine except where stated (6) £450-500

Lieutenant-General Sir Andrew Clarke, was born in Hampshire in 1824 and was educated at King’s School, Canterbury, Portosa Enniskillen and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. He entered the Royal Engineers in 1844 and in 1848 as a Lieutenant was employed on special service in New Zealand in command of a party making a detailed reconnaissance within the disturbed areas, in the presence of and engaging with the enemy. He became Surveyor-General of Victoria in 1853 and as M.P. for Melbourne became Minister for Lands before resigning in 1857. As Captain he was placed on a special mission to the West Coast of Africa including Ashanti, 1863-4, for which he was mentioned in despatches. As Director of Works of the Navy, 1864-73, he designed and constructed the great extensions to the naval arsenals at Chatham, Portsmouth, Plymouth, Cork, Malta and Bermuda. Later appointments included that of Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Straits and Settlements; Minister of Public Works in India, 1857-80 and Inspector General of Fortifications, 1881-86. He attained the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1886 and d ied in 1902.
