General Sir Henry Horne, 1st Baron Stirkoke, was born in Stirkoke in1861 and educated at Harrow and at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. He was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1880 and as a Major served in the Boer War where he was mentioned in despatches and received the brevet of Lieutenant-Colonel. Entering the Great War as Brigadier-General he commanded the Artillery of 1st Corps in 1914; commanded the 2nd Division in 1915, serving in Egypt for the defence of the Suez Canal. In the following year he commanded 15th Corps and thence the 1st Army in France until the end of the War, for which he was promoted General, mentioned in despatches and awarded the K.C.B. and K.C.M.G. After the war he was created 1st Baron Stirkoke and received the G.C.B. Retiring in 1926, he died in 1929. The recipient’s full-size awards were sold at Sotheby’s, lot 153, 28.2.1985.
