Boys Life Brigade Medal, bronze-gilt, with bar ‘1924’, reverse inscribed, ‘L/Cpl. J. Saphier’, complete with brooch bar, good very fine and rare £200-250

‘On Sunday 25.6.1924, during the Summer Camp of the 1st West Lancashire Boys Life Brigade at Rhyl, North Wales. L/Cpl. Saphier and John Rimmer were returning from parade at 9.30 am when they were met by another member of the parade, who alerted them of a fire in Hut No.5. L/Cpl. Saphier sent the two boys for help and he made his way to Hut No.5 where he found the door locked. At the side of the hut he found an open window which he climbed through and he found John Burke on the floor of the hut; he had been overcome by smoke. Not in fear of his own life and at this point becoming overcome by the smoke, he dragged Burke over to the open window. At this point Master John Ellis and Groundsman Peter Williams managed to remove both of the boys out of the window and get them to safety.’ (extract from the Hooton News)
