John George Carter was born in 1887 and enlisted into the Durham Light Infantry in 1906. Transferring to India in 1914 he served with the Durham Light infantry, East Yorkshire Regiment, West Yorkshire Regiment and was on the Indian Unnattached List during the period 1914-21, after which he served with the Indian Corps of Clerks. Promoted Sergeant in 1918, Staff Sergeant in 1919, Quarter Master Sergeant in 1928 and Conductor in 1929. He was commisioned Lieutenant in 1936, Captain in 1938 and retired with the rank of Major in 1939. Sold with a quantity of copied service and related papers.
