Arthur Dudley Riches was born in October 1887 and worked as a bank official in Lombard Street, London until enlisting in the Royal Fusiliers on the outbreak of hostilities. Arriving in France as a Private in the 21st Battalion in November 1915, he gained a commission in the Northumberland Fusiliers in August 1916 and transferred to the Royal Flying Corps. He subsequently served as an Observer in No. 7 Balloon Wing out in France from March 1918 until the end of hostilities.
