India General Service 1908-35, 1 clasp, North West Frontier 1930-31 (Mohd. Shafi, Survey Dept.) edge nicks, very fine £20-30

At the outbreak of the Redshirt Rebellion on the North West Frontier in 1930, a handful of civilians were besieged in a small town in the Tirah district. Employed on survey work for the construction of new roads in an effort to make the outer areas of the country more accessible, they were completely cut off for over 28 days, until relieved by advancing Government columns. During this period, they were constantly harassed by the rebels and on no fewer than three occasions did they drive the enemy off with gunfire, suffering several casualties within their small group.
