Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 1 clasp, Natal (H. L. Porteous, Surgeon) extremely fine £140-160

Herbert Llewellyn Porteous was born in September 1870 and was educated at Highgate School, London prior to being elected an M.R.C.S. in 1898. Interestingly, according to The Medical Dictionary, he had earlier served as a Surgeon in one of Francis Leybourne-Popham’s expeditions to the Yenisei River in the vicinity of the Western Kara Sea in the 1890s, quite probably his 1893 expedition in the Blencathra.

Subsequently employed as a Civil Surgeon in the Boer War, he served with No. 4 General Hospital, Mooi River, Natal between February and July 1900, and aboard the transport Tagus until resigning at the end of the year. He subsequently set up practice in Gloucestershire and died there in March 1915.
