South Africa 1877-79, 1 clasp, 1877-8-9 (Lieut. M. L. Jones, 5th Bn. N.N. Infantry) good very fine £400-500

After the disastrous performance of the Natal Native Contingent at Isandhlwana, the unit was reconstituted with the title ‘Natal Native Infantry’ thus avoiding the stigma attached to the previous title. In spite of this, however, medals were named both to Natal Native Contingent and to Natal Native Infantry to those members of the unit that escaped from Iasndhlwana or who were with Chelmsford’s main column and reconstituted thereafter.
