Ashantee 1873-74, 1 clasp, Coomassie (1381 Cr. Serjt. J. Wilson, 2 Bn. Rifle Bde. 1873-4) good very fine £250-300

Sergeant James Wilson was born in Dublin and attested to the 42nd Regiment in 1855, aged 17 years. During the Indian Mutiny, he served with his regiment and received the medal with the clasp for Lucknow. Attaining the rank of Colour Sergeant in 1859, he reverted to Private in 1865 when he transferred to the Rifle Brigade. Promoted Sergeant during the same year, he was reduced to Private in 1871 when found guilty of being drunk on duty. He was re-appointed Colour Sergeant in 1874 and served with his regiment in the Ashantee War. He was discharged with a pension in 1875 as being medically unfit for further service. Sold with copied service papers.

The recipient’s Indian Mutiny 1857-58, 1 clasp, Lucknow, was sold in these Rooms on 28.3.2002, Lot 347.
