Garrett Gill enlisted in the 18th Hussars in August 1795 but exchanged into the 19th Light Dragoons in October 1811, following his service in the Sahagun and Benevente operations. He was finally discharged as a Troop Sergeant-Major at Brighton in November 1819, aged 42 years.
