John Lauder was born in Manchester and attested for the Royal Engineers at Chatham in March 1864, aged 19 years. Arriving in Canada in June 1867, he went on to qualify for one of just 13 ‘Fenian Raid 1870’ clasps issued to men of the R.E. and was advanced to Lance-Corporal in September 1873. Further advancement to Corporal followed in May 1878 and he was awarded his L.S. and G.C. Medal in General Order 271 of 1882. Lauder was finally discharged in April 1885, after 21 years with the Colours.
