Hubert Charles Thorn was born near Newbury, Berkshire in September 1879 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in February 1897. Advanced to Able Seaman in late 1897, he joined H.M.S. Doris in January 1899 and was employed ashore with the Naval Brigade during the Boer War, qualifying for a three-clasp Medal for ‘Cape Colony’, ‘Paardeberg’ and ‘Driefontein’. Thorn was invalided from the Service in July 1902.
