Jubilee 1887, clasp, 1897, Metropolitan Police (P.C., A. Divn.); Coronation 1902, Metropolitan Police (P.C., 3rd Div.); Coronation 1911, Metropolitan Police (P.C.); together with a fine privately produced silver medal for life saving, obv. finely engraved depiction of a policeman, still wearing his helmet, diving from a bridge into the Serpentine to save a figure in the water, the whole set within a heavy floral border; rev. inscription ‘Presented by the A.D.S.C. to P.C. F. Thomas For gallantry displayed in saving life in the Serpentine 25.8.93’, with engraved bar suspension and ribbon brooch, nearly extremely fine and rare (4) £100-150

A London newspaper, the Daily News, dated Monday, August 28, 1893, carried the following news item: ‘At the Marleborough street Police Court on Saturday, Constable 440 “A” Thomas was highly commended for saving the life of Albert French, who had jumped into the Serpentine (in Hyde Park) from the bridge. The constable swam out to the man, who struggled with him, and both went under water twice before the rescue could be effected.’ Sold with relative copy and career details.
