Frederick Hastings was born in Birmingham on 9 March 1887, and served in the Coldstream Guards for four years until 29 January 1908. He joined the Metropolitan Police on 1 June 1908 as a P.C. in “L” Division. He was recalled to the Colours in August 1914 and landed in France on the 30th of that month. He served on the Western Front until 23 July 1915 when he received a shrapnel wound in the right knee. Discharged physically unfit from the Army four days later, he rejoined the Police on 2 August 1915 and was finally pensioned out on 4 June 1933.
