Walter William Felstead was born at Terrington St Clements, Norfolk, on 17 April 1870, and enlisted into the 1st Royal Dragoons in 1889. He served for seven years, chiefly in Ireland, and was discharged on 3 April 1896, serving a further five years on the Reserve until April 1901. He joined the Metropolitan Police on 1 June 1896 but was recalled for service in South Africa with the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons in 1899. He returned to the Police in 1902 and was retired on pension on 5 June 1921.
