Ernest Frederick Johnson was born at Aldersgate, London, on 28 March 1881. He attested for the 1st Dragoons in London in January 1899 but, at 5 feet 9 inches, was deemed to be too tall for the cavalry and was transferred to the Royal Horse Artillery. He was posted to “O” Battery R.H.A. in February 1899 and served with that battery in South Africa from October 1899, including the Relief of Kimberley. On 10 November 1900 he was posted to the Vickers-Maxim Battery for service in China, where he remained until 7 October 1902. He joined the Metropolitan Police on 16 April 1906 and served in “R”, “W” and “Z” Divisions, being promoted Sergeant in June 1912. He returned to Army service in April 1916 but did not serve overseas and rejoined the Police in June 1918, eventually retiring on pension on 20 April 1931.
