Joseph Brooks was born at St Michael’s, Bath, Somerset, on 25 January 1855. He enlisted into the 88th Foot in 1873 and served 6 years and 178 days, seeing service in South Africa in 1877-79 as a Sergeant. He remained on the Reserve from March 1880 until September 1885, having joined the Metropolitan Police on 12 July 1880. During his police career he served in “J”, “L” and “W” Divisions, being promoted to Inspector in April 1896. He retired on pension on 17 July 1905 but was recalled from the Reserve for the Coronation of King George V.
