Joseph Appleford was born on 19 March 1831 and joined the 15th Hussars in 1849 (No. 1566). Early in his career he transferred to the 2nd Dragoon Guards (No. 306) and served with the regiment throughout the Indian Mutiny. He was invalided out on 13 February 1861, whilst stationed at Lucknow, and returned to England. He joined the Metropolitan Police on 29 September 1862, and retired as a Divisional Inspector in “V” Division in March 1890.
