Henry Thomas Eckersley was born on 13 October 1873, at St Germans, Cornwall. His father was an Engineer in the Royal Navy, and later Chief Engineer. He was educated at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the West India Regiment with seniority 28 September 1895. He joined the 1st Battalion in Jamaica, and was promoted to Lieutenant on 1 October 1897. He took part in the operations in Sierra Leone in 1898-99, in the Karene Expedition, and was mentioned in despatches London Gazette 29 December 1899 (Medal with clasp).

Eckersley was appointed to Colonial Military Employment on 27 June 1900, and was seconded for service in West Africa from the same date. Promoted to Captain on 25 July 1900, he took part in the Ashanti campaign of that year and was once more mentioned in despatches
London Gazette 8 March 1901 (Medal). Captain H. T. Eckersley died on 15 October 1902, two days after his 29th Birthday. Sold with further research including copies of relevant Gazettes.
