A Boer War D.C.M. pair awarded to Quarter-Master Sergeant R. Thompson, Hampshire Imperial Yeomanry, late North Irish Horse

Distinguished Conduct Medal, E.VII.R. (11062 Q.M. Serjt. R. Thompson, 50th Coy. I.Y.); Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 4 clasps, Cape Colony, Rhodesia, Orange Free State, Transvaal (11062 Cpl., 60th Coy. 17th Imp. Yeo.) surname spelt ‘Thomson’ on the first, edge bruise to the second, otherwise good very fine (2) £1200-1400

D.C.M. London Gazette 27 September 1901. The recommendation states: ‘I consider this N.C.O. the best in the battalion. In addition to his duties of Q.M.S. he has for some months acted as Supply Officer to the column. He served with the old 17th I.Y. and was a good N.C.O. in the field.’

Robert Thompson originally served with the 60th (North Irish Horse) Company, 17th Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry, and was one of approximately 130 men to get the clasp for Rhodesia. He was latterly serving with the 50th (Hampshire) Company, 17th Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry, and is also entitled to the King’s medal.
