Three: Major G. J. Wevell, South African Engineer Corps

Defence Medal, unnamed as issued by the British authorities; War Medal and Africa Service Medal, both officially impressed (179980 G. J. Wevell) very fine (3) £40-50

Major Gerald John Wevell was commanding officer of the Anti-Gas Laboratory, Premier Mine, and in charge of the General Staff Section at Defence H.Q. in Pretoria. In November 1942 he was seconded for special duty as liaison officer to the British Army, on the staff of the High Commissioner to the Union of South Africa in London. As a highly qualified chemist he was in close contact with the Research Department at Woolwich for the production of explosives and would have visited Porton Sutton Oak and other establishments concerned with explosives and chemical warfare. He returned to South Africa in June 1943 and was released from military service in January 1944. Sold with full service details including confirmation of Defence Medal being issued by British authorities.
