William Frederick Pagel, a diesel engine driver by profession, joined the Prince Alfred’s Guard in Port Elizabeth on 10 October 1940. He was posted to the Regiment President Steyn in July 1941 and was wounded by a bullet in the shoulder on 28 November 1941 at the battle of Sidi Rezegh, where his regiment served as the Machine Gun Battalion of the 1st South African Division.
