Lieutenant Derek Harold Peel Yates was born in 1897 and was commissioned into the Indian Army in 1917. Promoted Lieutenant in June 1918, he was Acting Captain during March-August 1918 and again during June-October 1919. During the Great War he served in operations against the Mahsuds, June-August 1917 and in Mesopotamia, January-June 1918. He attained the rank of Captain in 1921.
